I want to talk about how you can create your sanctuary in your life.
A sanctuary is a space you have set aside as unique. It has its purpose; it is a place that nurtures your creativity and inspires you to be more yourself, in both professional and personal spheres.
For me, knitting time is sacred!
So, I set myself up for success by creating a space that makes it easy for me to practice knitting every day.
I had created a space that invites me to sit and knit and makes me feel calm and relaxed even with all my daughters playing around!
I encourage you to spend time today creating your sanctuary.
It doesnโt need to be fancy. It could just be a comfortable place to sit or your reading nook.
Your sanctuary will be as unique as you are. No one but you can create it for you, and there arenโt any rules, but Iโve outlined some helpful suggestions and tools that can help you along the way.
Create Your Sanctuary
1. Choose your spot
If you already have a comfy sit somewhere you like, you can skip to the next tip. If you donโt, ask yourself: what helps you focus on your work? Do you need to be beside a window? Do you need peace, or do you feel more motivated when youโre closer to the everyday bustle of the home?
2. Clear away the clutter
Decide how you will stay organized. For my knitting, I keep my yarn and books close by, all in one built-in shelf on my living room. And I keep my work in progress in a beautiful basket where I can see and access it easily.
3. Pick your color
Do you have a color that inspires you? Perhaps a bright red pillow would suit you perfectly. Or maybe blues will soothe you as you trudge through your things.
I love yellow, pink, white and blue (but also black). Youโll find a lot of my favorite around my sanctuary!
4. Make your space โyou”
I love plants and diffuser so you can bet my area has both.
I also have a hand cream nearby. This is crucial for times of high stress, to bring you back down to Earth and give you a sense of perspective.
5. Idea Journal
Whether youโre working, keep an idea journal handy, so you can record those great thoughts that come to us while in daydream mode. Whether itโs a new pattern, a business start-up idea, a recipe, lyrics to a song, or whatever else satiates your creative juices, it is essential that your fleeting thoughts be recorded. Write it down; make it happen.
Pro tip: To get the most out of your Sanctuary, make sure it is free from distractions.
That means turning off your phone, the TV, and computer for the duration of your practice.
When youโre done, take a moment to enjoy the peaceful sanctuary that you have created for yourself.
