The Ultimate Guide for Knitters – Project Bag Essentials

As a knitter, you can feel the urge to buy knitting supplies for your project bag to step up your knitting game. But many of these things will sit in your stash, unused.
You don’t need piles of equipment, but time, practice, and essentials you will love and find useful.

I encourage you to curate a project bag essentials for your knitting supplies.
To help you, here is my guide to the project bag essentials that most knitters will ever need.

Project Bag Essentials

A set of circular interchangeable knitting needles.

When I learned to knit, my parents purchased a set of straight needles.
However, three years ago, I purchased my set of interchangeable needles, and until now, I have rarely used the straights.
You can knit any project, flat or circular, on this style of knitting needle, plus they distribute the weight of the fabric better and soothe the posture in knitting, less wrist pain for you!

Tape measure

If you’re going to knit anything that fits, you are going to need a tape measure.

Embroidery Scissors

These scissors are my all-time favorite for many reasons. At 4 inches, they are compact enough to fit into any bag, insanely sharp, and my favorite perk is that they are perfect for Instagram pictures!

Stitch markers

I adore the set of plastic stitch markers that I bought from Joann many months ago. These have a locking design perfect for me because sometimes I forgot to put a marker.
They are useful to keep track of stitch sequences and to mark the start of a round when knitting circularly.

Crochet hook

This is useful for picking up dropped stitches or mending mistakes. I have a small 3.5mm in my knitting kit.

Tapestry needle

Use this for weaving in ends. A medium-sized one should do the trick most of the time.

Optional

Needles organizer

I still use my badly-designed case that came with my needles, even though the needles fell out, and it was hard to organize anything in it. But there are a lot of extraordinarily well-designed and beautiful cases to keep everything in order.

Project bag

I like to use my conchiglia bag to keep my knitting in place on my coffee table or when traveling.

Pen and notebook

If you are used to making notes on patterns and keep track of your row count, a pen and notebook will be useful.

Pompom Maker

I have three daughters, so for me, it is a must!
With these makers in a variety of sizes, you can make one in every size.

Yarn Ball Winder

When you give her all those lovely hanks of handmade yarn, it’s going to need to wind them into cakes, and this is the gadget to handle that task.

Yarn Swift

I have the one my mom used in her schoolโ€ฆ almost 40 years ago!
A swift will hold the hank and let it be wound with ease.

The Ultimate Guide for Knitters - Project Bag Essentials

Essentially, all you need is a pair of needles and some yarn.
We probably don’t need knitting goodies, and we just need more knitting time!
