Free pattern – Herringbone Washcloth

Do you know there is a difference between a dishcloth and a dishtowel?
Think about this: Would you take a bath towel or a hand towel into the shower, soap it up, and scrub it with it? No, you wouldn’t.
A towel is not meant for that. A towel is meant to dry stuff that is wet off. Stuff that’s wet from water.
You might use a washcloth in the shower. Then, you would dry the water off of yourself with a bath towel.

In the kitchen, it works the same way.
We wash things with a dishcloth. Then we dry them with a dishtowel.
In case of doubt, ask yourself: “Is it plain water?”
If yes, you can use a dishtowel. If not, please use a dishcloth.

Now, back to the pattern… This Herringbone washcloth was designed initially as a scrap-buster for my leftover yarn from a doll blanket for my youngest daughter.
It’s a simple, quick knit that makes a great gift too!

Row 1: * K2tbl – removing 1st sts off the needle with 2nd sts remaining; rep to last st, sl1.
Row 2: *P2tog – removing 1st sts off the needle with 2nd sts remaining; rep to last st, sl1.
Repeat Rows 1-2 until the piece measures 11″ from CO.
Bind off, sew in ends and block.

Hook loop (optional)

Using a US 8 / 5 mm hook, chain for 2”/ 5 cm.

If you prefer, you can finger chain for 2”/ 5 cm.
To do this, make a large slipknot loop as if you were making the first stitch of a knit or crochet project. Holding the working yarn and the tail in your left hand, use your right hand’s thumb and middle finger to reach through the loop, grab the working yarn, pull a loop through the original loop, and pull it taught. Then, reach through that loop, grab the working yarn, pull through another loop, and pull it through. Continue in this manner until the chains measure 2”/5cm.

Tune the tail ends together to form a loop in whatever method you use. Fold the washcloth in half and use the tail ends to secure the loop to the center point.
Secure and weave in all ends.
