I am very excited to share the artist Daniella, from Odd knots and threads, with all of you.
Odd knots and threads is a brand fun and vibrant while being its own style.
The owner, Daniella, has a strong eye for color and attention to detail that makes it easy to fall in love with her quite distinctive skeins.
Daniella agreed to let me interview her for my blog, so Iโll shine the spotlight on her yarns and progress keepers.
Go further and take a look at what inspires Daniella and what being an Indie Dyer means to her.
1. Tell a little about yourself.
Salutations Maker Nation! My name is Daniella, a Designer, Indie Dyer, and Progress Keeper Artist with a love for dark, black, and moody aesthetics. I live in way too sunny Florida, where Iโm a wife to a very supportive husband, a Mother to two bold and beautiful girls, and a human to a very lazy cat named Jay Gatsby.
2. What inspired you to start your business as a dyer?
Dying is something Iโve always wanted to do, but I tend to be a perfectionist, and with that comes a lot of self-criticisms. I never want to produce anything that Iโm not 100% proud of. So the research began. I spent months researching, practicing, and educating myself on the dyeing process before I even considered coming out with my first collection. It was a scary time, a lot of self-doubts crept in, which had me wondering if people even wanted to see a yarn line from me. But I stuck to it, many sleepless nights later, here we are!
3. What is your favorite part about being a dyer?
You learn something new every single time! Iโm constantly learning and growing. I get excited when the color strikes the yarn, each skein is dyed differently. I love watching the colors Iโve created come to life in the pot and then be revived again once the skeins are dry. The possibilities for colors, shades, and textures are endless!
4. What’s your source of inspiration?
Iโm inspired by the world around me, whether it be a dark and moody photograph, a beautifully aged painting, or a lovely crystal-rich in color. I tend to be drawn to neutrals, blacks, and deep jewel-toned colors. I wanted my yarn to be a reflection of me, while also sticking to my brandโs refined aesthetic.
5. What makes your work special?
I had to think really hard about this one, I actually left it blank and came back to this question. Iโm always very honored and humbled when anyone takes the time to purchase my work. The amount of time, quality, and attention to detail that goes into everything are extremely important to me. Before I begin to dye, I envision what I could possibly create with a said skein and how I want that to translate in the colors. I’m a very visual person so thinking and planning ahead always helps me achieve the look I want. I want people to be excited when they see the little black label that is Odd Knots + Threads, and I want to make enough of an impact to keep them coming back for more.
6. How often do you restock?
I try to restock yarn or drop collections every 3-4 weeks and progress keepers are updated every other week!
7. You have a lot of beautiful skeins available, do you have a favorite shade?
Itโs definitely a tie between โSmoky Quartzโ and โGiselleโ. For โSmoky Quartzโ I spent days staring at pictures of the crystal online, as well as holding and looking at the ones from my own collection, to help me better visualize how I wanted to execute this colorway.
โGiselleโ is more of an emotional tie for me, as itโs named after someone very important in my life. A mother figure, who is made up of strength and softness rolled in one. She spends her days dancing and performing ballet, which is what inspired the whimsical colorway.
8. How do you like to spend your time outside of your dyeing work?
You can probably find me doing all the mom things, knitting, listening to crime podcasts, reading a good book, or getting in touch with my spirituality.
9. What’s in store for the next season?
More yarn, more progress keepers, and maybe a few designs too! I also have a few other things that are gonna be added to the notions line so stick around!
