They make them a wonderful beginner-friendly knitting project that lets you explore new stitches, colorwork, and textures without committing to a large piece.

In this collection, I’ve designed a series of FREE Coasters Patterns, each building on the previous one’s skills. Whether just starting your knitting journey or looking for a quick, satisfying project, these coasters will boost your confidence and add handmade beauty to your home.

From simple garter stitch to elegant twisted ribbing and playful stripes, each pattern is designed to be:

FREE Coasters Patterns

What You’ll Need:

Needles
US 8 / 5 mm needles

Yarn
For each coaster: around 103 yds / 95 m of Worsted weight yarn, cotton or cotton blend.

Gauge
15 stitches and 24 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in garter stitch

Sizing
Approximately 4 in / 10 cm square

Other notions
Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors

Coaster – 1

A small, simple, and handy coaster. This little project is perfect for practicing your stitches while creating something beautiful and practical for your home. Step-by-step video here.

With US 8 / 5 mm needles, CO 15 sts.
Knit even for 4 rows.
Setup row: K3, pm, k to last 3 sts, pm, k to end.
Row 1: K3, sm, p to last 3 sts, sm, k to end.
Row 2: K3, sm, k to last 3 sts, sm, k to end.
Rep row 1-2, 6 more times.
Next row: K3, rm, k to last 3 sts, rm, k to end.
Knit even for 3 rows.
Bind off.
Weave in all ends.

Coaster 2 – Seed Stitch

Another simple but stylish coaster, using a beautiful textured pattern that’s just as beginner-friendly as yesterday’s project but with a fresh look. This one features a classic seed stitch, which adds a lovely texture and lies flat without curling. It’s a perfect project for practicing knit and purl combinations. Step-by-step video here.

With US 8 / 5 mm needles, CO 15 sts.
Row 1: K1, p1 to last sts, k1.
Rep row 1, 23 more times.
Bind off.
Weave in all ends.

Coaster 3 – Twisted ribbing

A beautifully textured coaster using twisted ribbing. A simple yet effective stitch that creates a firm, elegant fabric. Step-by-step video here.

With US 8 / 5 mm needles, CO 15 sts.
Row 1: K1tbl, p1 to last sts, k1tbl.
Row 2: P1tbl, k1 to last sts, p1tbl.
Rep row 1-2, until your coaster measures 4″/10 cm from cast on.
Bind off.
Weave in all ends.

Coaster 4 – Stripes

This simple striped coaster is the perfect way to practice changing colors smoothly without carrying floats or dealing with tension issues. Plus, you can customize it with your favorite colors! Step-by-step video here.

With Color 1 and US 8 / 5 mm needles, CO 15 sts.
Knit even for 2 rows.
With Color 2 Knit even for 2 rows.
With Color 1 Knit even for 2 rows.
Rep alternating those rows, until your coaster measures 4″/10 cm from cast on.
Bind off.
Weave in all ends.
