How to Make Easy Himmeli Ornament

I love Christmas, but sometimes wish there was a more elegance when it comes to decorations. Presenting these Brass Geometric Ornaments (known by DIYers as a Himmeli ornament).
This is a traditional decoration from Finland, I love for their simplicity and clean lines.

When I decided to DIY all my Christmas decorations this year I knew I wanted to kick things off, why feed into the big business of the holiday season when you can make something really cool yourself?
Thatโ€™s when I started playing around with the idea of making a himmeli ornament.

To make a basic himmeli polyhedron is simple.
All you need is a package of straws, floral wire, and scissors. I constructed this with the help of this tutorial.

Before we progress, two gentle directions:

  1. Keep the thread pulled tight at all times. You need tension in the situation to keep things looking good in the end.
  2. If youโ€™re using thread, it may feel like itโ€™s never going to get into shape. Don’t worry.

This geometric Finnish ornament has been having a moment in the craft world for some time. Himmeli is traditionally made of straw and can include hundreds, even thousands of pieces depending on how complex they are. Once you understand the basic shapes, the possibilities are endless.

The fun part is where you can add your design simply adding more sticks.
Or you can use alternative materials to make himmeli more interesting or more sustainable.
I found himmeli made by cocktail straw and himmeli made by cinnamon sticks!

I have gathered many images of how Himmeli(s) are usedโ€ฆother than for Christmas decorations: Himmeli as air plant holder, as plant cage, as Wedding decorations, as a pendant necklace, as mobiles, as light fixture, as garland, โ€ฆ

Himmeli ornaments are perfect for all you Scandinavian holiday lovers, don’t you think?
