Why I Love Tile in Decor and Casting

Enter tile. The versatile, modular wall and floor covering are available in seemingly endless shapes, sizes, colors, and materials.

Ceramic tiles are one of the oldest forms of decorative art. It is known that Egyptians on the 4th-millennium b.c. already used to decorate their houses with blue tiles. However, it was Portugal after the 16th century that truly embraced the ceramic tile art and made it one of its cultural expressions.

Perhaps one of the most meaningful reasons we tend to โ€˜fallโ€™ in love with patterned tile is because itโ€™s trendy and itโ€™s timeless.

With my sincere love for tile, Iโ€™ve come up with some reasons why you should fall in love with patterned tile, too:

  1. Flexibility: there are countless design options. I challenge you to start Googling and try to count them all.
  2. Stylish: if there is a space that is simple or basic, patterned tiles in a small area can have a big impact on the overall aesthetic.
  3. Bold: Go simple or grand. Whether itโ€™s a backsplash in a residential design project or the flooring in a big commercial project, the gratifying effect of good pattern design is always present.
  4. Creative: Patterned tile is visually stimulating. It has been proven that patterns enhance the customer experience.
  5. Tactile: Designers can choose the effect they want their tile to have. Texture, depth, and color are all in the control of the creator.

Patterned tile has inspired knitting and other textiles during the centuries.
Tile knitting stitches are beautiful style stitches to add to your knitting pattern list. Start with the three simplest:

Herringbone: the โ€œVโ€ in the pattern acts like arrows pointing you in the right direction, the herringbone pattern is a popular stitch and tile.
Geometric: shapes are defined by simple lines, curves or outlines.
Squares, diamonds, hexagons and any geometric mosaic tiles are a good place to start.
Mosaic: in tiles, is a technique made from very small pieces, in knitting if you have a simple colorwork design in mind, the mosaic is probably the right choice for your project.

Select tiles from one of the above categories, and you will have more than enough inspiration for a garment of which the Great Gatsby would be envious.
