Tell a little about yourself

My name is Victoria, I am the owner of Purl Scout Yarns I live in South Jersey with my partner and my adventure kitty Ares. I am a professional circus artist and circus coach. I am a self-taught knitter who also crochets, spins, weaves, and dyes! Socks are my comfort knit and I almost exclusively knit with fingering weight yarns.

What inspired you to start your business as a dyer?

I have always loved indie dyed yarns, I own more than I care to admit haha. I wanted the opportunity to put my own spin on themed colorways using natural dyes.

What is your favorite part about being a dyer?

I love planning colorways, especially multi-colored ones. My dye notebook is a hot mess with scribbles for recipes and drawn skeins for planning where colors go. It is so exciting to plan out a colorway and have it come out exactly how I planned it. As frustrating as it can be when the times it doesn’t work out the way I want, I enjoy the problem solving of figuring out why it didn’t work. My second favorite part is how excited folks get about the colorways!

What’s your source of inspiration?

My main source of inspiration is the Sailor Moon universe. There are so many ways that different colors can play together. Most of my inspiration aside from that comes from animated shows and movies I have loved, like Studio Ghibli movies.

What makes your work special?

When I was looking at starting my business using natural dyes I noticed that there isn’t a saturated market of natural dyes, to begin with, let alone natural dyers that play with natural dyes like acid dyes. I saw an opportunity to create a niche, which is dyeing vibrant themed colorways, specifically multi-colored, using natural dyes.

You have a lot of beautiful skeins available, do you have a favorite shade?

Thank you! It is so hard to choose, my color palette is definitely pastels. I would have to say it is a toss-up between Magical Girl and Diana.

What’s in store for the next season?

So far the summer has been all about Sailor Moon. I am currently planning colorways for characters from movies like Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke.
