If you’re stuck on figuring out the design direction for your next sweater pattern, in the planning stage, you may make a moodboard to help gather thoughts.
A moodboard (or inspiration board) is a type of visual collage consisting of images, text, sketches, and samples of objects in a composition. It can be based upon a set topic or aesthetic.
Moodboards inspire all my branding projects. I usually collect images on Pinterest of the feel you want my new design to have. I know that moodboards will inspire you too! So I’ll show you how you can create a moodboards for your inspiration.
Start Your Moodboard
- Brainstorm your theme. Search keywords associated with your ideas; this will help you with online image searches.
- Collect your elements. Take your inspiration, then challenge yourself to think outside of the box. Movies, vintage illustrations, artworks, architecture, can all be good moodboard fodder.
- Review your board. You now have more material than is useful, curate by choosing images and samples that come together harmoniously. A cohesive color palette is essential.
Types of moodmoards
โข Digital moodboards: Using Pinterest boards. It’s so simple. You have to look for inspiration and pinning to your board!
โข Physical moodboard: Using a large piece of foamboard. Cut out your images neatly and stick them to the board. You might layer the images on top of each other, so they completely cover the board
What to include
Fashion or knitwear inspiration, like garment silhouettes, stitch ideas, color palettes, yarns, and details.
Then choose the mood of your design. Include images that depict the aesthetic.
Once you are finished, the theme of your design should be evident.
By using a moodboard based on images and words that represent your brand, you can then ensure that any visual asset made for your brand will align with your brand personality. The goal is quality, consistency, and focus
