Reflections about knitting

I was first introduced to knitting in a difficult time in my life by my mom’s neighbor, who knits a lot of clothes for her grandchildren. At the time, I was barely managing a garter stitch scarf, but knitting made me happy.

Now I think knitting is not just a job or hobby. It’s an apt metaphor for life.
Each stitch is a part of something bigger. And you see all the progress you make through time. It’s almost meditative how you repeat the same motion over and over yet slowly create something.

My point is that knitting seems to serve as a visual representation of the time spent creating.
In life, you don’t always have something to show for all the effort you put in. Life doesn’t work that cleanly, but knitting is different.
It’s making something you can use and wear on a daily basis. It’s thinking of the person you’re knitting for and putting your love into every stitch.

Plus each stitch is created in the same way. But, just as life from second to second isn’t ever quite the same, each stitch you knit varies slightly: in tightness, size, etc.
It’s reminded me to stay in the moment. To look back on all the progress and be proud of it, regardless of how imperfect it may look.
And maybe that’s what life’s about: loving that which is imperfect, loving things despite their flaws.

Either way, knitting’s made its way into my heart first, as one of my favorite pastimes, and now, as my dream job.
