Seriously, What Knitting Needles do I need For A Blanket?

I created a blog post series to encourage new or hesitant knitters who want to challenge themselves to knit a blanket. I will talk about some of the hints, tips, tricks, and techniques Iโ€™ve found most helpful in my blanket knitting journey.

My first guide in my blanket knitting series is about the question I’ve asked the most: What Knitting Needles do I need For A Blanket?
I remember how intimidated I was by the idea of knitting a huge blanket before I got my first one on the needles.

Once youโ€™ve chosen your pattern and yarn, the next step is to decide what type of needles you will use to knit your blanket.

Circular or straight needles?

If you want to be a lifelong knitter, save your wrists by choosing the right tools: circular needles.
You will still knit back and forth in rows, but the weight of the numerous stitches and growing fabric will rest on your lap as you work, rather than your wrists having to bear the strain.
If you are knitting a blanket using a thinner or lighter yarn, you can get away with straight needles, but make sure the needles are extra long to hold the numerous stitches that blankets require. This is probably the best choice for beginners because it makes it easy to handle the needles.

Interchangeable or fixed Circular Needles?

Fixed circular needles have the cord permanently attached to the needles. They come in different lengths. The most common lengths used for blankets are 32โ€ (80 cm) and 40โ€ (100 cm). But unless you always knit blankets with the same yarn weight, youโ€™ll need to buy a different needle for each blanket you make.
Having an interchangeable circular needle set is the most cost-effective option for knitters. It gives you the versatility of changing out needle sizes if needed to obtain the gauge without going out and buying another circular needle because interchangeable circular needles allow you to remove the needle tips from the cord.
They cost more initially but are cheaper than buying multiple fixed circular needles in the long run.

Bamboo or Metal Knitting Needles?

Bamboo needles are warm and smooth in hand and donโ€™t have the clicking noise of metal needles. Stitches also do not slip off bamboo needles as quickly as they do off metal needles, making working with them much easier!
Metal needles have a cold feel but allow stitches to move quickly so that you can knit faster.

Size

When using a knitting pattern, it usually comes with the size of a needle to use. This is usually a recommendation, and you can use a different size, but it is a good idea to stick to the recommended size or one up or down. For loose stitches, consider a size down. For tight, consider a size up. If you donโ€™t know, however, go with the recommended size.
The best needle size for beginners would typically be between 6 (4.5mm) and 8 (5mm). You can use worsted weight yarn for this size, which is a manageable size yarn to use.
For a Baby Blanket, you probably wouldnโ€™t want to go below a size 4 (3.5 mm) or and more likely, would opt for size 6 to 8 (4 to 5 mm), but to knit up a baby blanket quickly, you could consider a larger sized needle, like a size 11 (8.00mm).
