Getting started with knit design

Where to start, how to begin, and what to do when you finally decide to get started with the knit design. Remember, any day can be your day one. You have to start somewhere, so start where you are.

Now, when I was getting started with knit design, I was the person that wants to know everything, to have everything figured out. In the years, I learned, done is better than perfect, I can do anything, but I canโ€™t do everything.

How to find your passion

We look at people that are making money off the things theyโ€™re most passionate about and think, โ€œIf only I could do the same.โ€ The hard thing is finding where your passion and action meet.
When youโ€™re trying to narrow down it, try to imagine your perfect day: How would you spend it? Then try to relate it to business or career.
Another way to start is to look at what are you pinning on Pinterest on searching on Instagram? Sometimes weโ€™re just too close to our passions that we forget about them.
You can start a Self-Exploration Journal. My favorite is โ€œCreativity Takes Courageโ€, and itโ€™s a beautiful way to learn more about yourself and your goals. If you don’t like to journal you can take a personality test that would help determine your strengths and weaknesses.

From plan to action

I am a planner taker, not an action taker. I take planning so seriously because I know the power of plan first and worrying about โ€œunexpectedโ€ later.
But if you are stuck in the planning phase, never really rolling into any action, itโ€™s time to move on: set deadlines for yourself and identify the priority.

Social Media

Getting comfortable with the platform you like more! I started with Pinterest; I always loved this platform! I started with 0 followers, and now I have more than 90.000!
So I decided to explore another platform and, one year ago, I started with Instagram โ€“ I’m still not so confident doing Instagram Stories, and I never do Instagram Live videos. I’m learning every day what to share, and I think it’s a safe space to get comfortable behind and in front of a camera.
For both, I’ve spent spend some time researching and testing, but it worth the time!

Etsy or Ravelry or both

Sometimes we get stuck at the beginning. Don’t worry and take the first step, create an account and start clicking around.
For Ravelry it’s easier, you don’t need so many details, for Etsy you have to work a little more.
Both need an about page, a photo, and a few listings!
Remember that it doesnโ€™t have to be glamorous, just start!
Dig in, find some good tips online (or ask me if you want), and implement one at a time.

Evolve

You’re allowed to evolve!
Looking back on my first post, the blog has evolved so much. Iโ€™ve given myself permission to change and grow and improve as I figured out what to do with my knit passion. Give yourself that same permission, and the first step, that first Instagram post, the first sketch, wonโ€™t feel so daunting.

Taking the Next Step

There is nothing better than a prioritized to-do list.
Make a to-do list of absolutely everything you want to accomplish, from your biz goals to doing the laundry. Find your top three priorities. If there is one large, break it down into smaller tasks and start doing!

Don’t stop learning; be a sponge.
Whether you like podcasts, blogs, or books, soak up the knowledge that experts have to offer, on entrepreneurs, on designers, and knitting. Remember that wherever you are, never stop taking one step at a time.
