Why Should you Frog in Knitting? Ps: with no actual frogs involved!

Pull a single stitch loose, and the others will follow: a chain reaction to a moment of distraction o disappointment with the fit.

What does it mean to frog in knitting?

Frogging in knitting is a fun term when you need to unravel your project.
The most common reason to frog is to go back and fix a mistake.
Small mistakes may not show, but some are too noticeable to ignore; that’s where frogging comes in: to repair errors or to reclaim yarn from a project you don’t want anymore.

Pin It Now, Read It Later!

Frogging is not Tinking.

To frog, remove your knitting needles and pull the yarn to rip back all the stitches you made. And because you “rip it, rip it” like “ribit, ribit” – the sound a frog makes, this is how it gets its name.
To tink, you unknit one stitch at a time. And “tink” is “knit” backward, which is how it gets its name.

How do you frog in knitting?

Getting in the right mood for frogging is similar to preparing for a yoga session. Breathe deep before beginning, and steel yourself for the work ahead.
Begin where you left off. If youโ€™ve got WIP with a ball attached, this will be easy, but the task becomes more difficult if you decide to unravel a FO.
Most of the time, pull your needles out of work and tug on the end of the yarn that you were working from. This easily rips back the stitches.
For FO, scissors may be required, but even if you come out with a little less yardage, thatโ€™s okay. At least, in the end, youโ€™ll have a usable yarn that can become something else you will surely love.

Difficulties in frogging

Frogging becomes difficult when working with certain types of yarn that don’t frog easily. Some yarn catches on itself when you unravel it, like mohair or worsted weight cotton.
In most cases, being patient and pulling very gently will allow you to frog all types of yarns. But in some cases, the frogging becomes a tangled mess, and you might have to use scissors!
A note about twisted stitches: After unraveling, itโ€™s crucial to ensure that your stitches are not twisted when placed back on the needle.

How to revive used yarns?

As our project dissolves into a pile of ramen noodle strands, this yarn with a memory and a past should also bring us hope for a new future.
Wind as you go, releasing your stress and strain.
When the project is no more, the skeins go into a sink or tub of warm water and soak until the kinks relax.

Mistakes in knitting are never fun, but they aren’t tragic either. Pay attention to where you need to stop, then take a deep breath and rip it!
